Sea Swimming in St. Ives

If you love the feeling of salty skin and a refreshing dip in clear blue water, you’re in the right place. St Ives is blessed with some of Cornwall’s most beautiful beaches, each offering its own unique sea swimming experience — whether you prefer calm paddling waters or a more invigorating open-water swim.

Porthmeor Beach is one of the town’s most popular beaches, known for its lively atmosphere and excellent surf. It’s home to a well-loved surf school and features fascinating rock pools to explore at low tide. Lifeguards patrol during the main season, making it a reassuring choice for families and confident swimmers alike.

On the other side of town, Porthminster Beach offers a more sheltered, crescent-shaped stretch of sand. Backed by lush green hills, it’s ideal for swimming, particularly when the tide is low and the water is calmer — perfect for a gentle morning dip.

Tucked close to the harbour, Porthgwidden Beach is one of our personal favourites. It’s smaller, more sheltered and ideal for a relaxed swim or bracing wild dip — and best of all, it’s just a short walk from Cornerways. The harbour walls offer protection from stronger swells, although care is needed around high tide when conditions can change more quickly.

Wherever you choose to swim, always check tide times and local conditions before heading in. Sea swimming in St Ives is refreshing, energising and a wonderful way to connect with the Cornish coast during your stay.
